About me

I’m Dr. Romy Engelbrecht, a clinical psychologist, registered music therapist, and researcher with over 10 years of experience in community mental health, palliative care, and aged care.

I’m passionate about creating inclusive, non-judgmental spaces where clients feel safe to explore challenges and build resilience. Using my background in creative therapies, I take a flexible, collaborative approach, helping adults and older adults navigate anxiety, chronic health conditions, life transitions, and women’s mental health with practical strategies and compassionate support.

  • Stress & Anxiety – including generalized anxiety, health anxiety, phobias, and adjustment challenges

  • Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder (OCD) - helping individuals manage intrusive thoughts, repetitive behaviors, and the anxiety that can accompany them through evidence-based strategies.

  • Coping and adjustment to Physical Health Conditions – supporting those with chronic illnesses, progressive neurological diseases, and life transitions

  • Women’s Mental Health – menopause, postnatal anxiety, endometriosis, gynaecological concerns, retirement, and late-life divorce

  • Palliative Care – supporting individuals and families through life-limiting illness and end-of-life care

  • Life transitions – supporting people through major life changes such as career or relationship shifts, relocation, retirement, health changes, and aging-related transitions, helping them cope, adjust, and build resilience.

I use a flexible, client-centered approach, tailoring therapy to each person’s needs and goals. My work draws on a combination of evidence-based and experiential therapies, including:

  • Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT) – helping clients identify unhelpful thought patterns and develop practical strategies to manage stress, anxiety, and life challenges.

  • Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT) – supporting individuals to accept difficult emotions, clarify their values, and take meaningful action in line with what matters most.

  • Experiential Approaches – including Emotion-Focused Therapy and chair work, which allow clients to explore feelings deeply, process difficult experiences, and build emotional awareness.

This integrative approach allows me to meet clients where they are, combining structured, goal-oriented strategies with creative, experiential techniques for meaningful and lasting change.
